and the future of the Kings is set in motion.
Aunt Hetty's Ordeal: Hetty King induces independant Gus Pike to attend school.
Who was/is Gus Pike:

*In the second season of Avonlea, it was decided that an outsider was needed to bring new perspective to our Avonlea family.  That outsider, created by Sullivan Entertainment, was Gus Pike.
*Initially a short term character, Gus proved to be such a fan favorite that his character was written into 27 more episodes.  Several of these episodes revolved around his character and Michael Mahonen received Gemini Award nominations for these episodes.

*The following is a written description of the character of Gus Pike:

"Not seventeen, Gus had arrived in Avonlea fresh off a fishing boat, almost penniless and living by his wits.  Rough and illiterate, he ended up working in the fish cannery and seemed destined for a life as a drifter.  Yet Gus turned out to be different from his coarse fellows at the cannery.  Under his unpolished exterior, Gus had the heart of a gentleman, and intelligent mind and a thirst to better himself."
